    Jan-Inge Wijk´s compositional activities include music for different solo instruments and chamber ensembles. His own instrument, the guitar,

occupies an important part of his work.

    His most extended compositions so far are three semi-theatrical works, PALIMPSEST  for two sopranos and chamber ensemble, based on his own texts in Danish, English and Latin (dur. c 75´), Universal Moments and Unforeseen Moments for soprano/reciter, and partly improvising flautist, with electroacoustic music based on animal sounds and his own poetry (dur. c 70´), Il fuoco e il fiume for soprano, mezzo soprano and chamber ensemble, based on selected fragments of Heraclitus (dur. c 90´).

    For the guitar he has written substantial works such as Långsam musik (“Slow Music”) and Three Short Statements on Suffering and the Ephemerality of Life for amplified guitar, as well as educational compositions and arrangements for beginners´ to conservatory level.

    Works by Jan-Inge Wijk have been performed in Denmark, Sweden, Poland, Argentina, Great Britain, Estonia, Latvia and Italy.



  


Being himself an amateur tango dancer

Jan-Inge takes an interest in the Argentine

tango and its music. As a consequence

he has also made compositions and

arrangements for tango ensembles

of different combinations, including

a collection of canciones for voice with

guitar trio by the legendary Argentine

singer and actor Carlos Gardel.




    Jan-Inge Wijk was educated as a guitarist at the Royal Danish Music Academy, Copenhagen, studying with professor Per-Olof Johnson. After his diploma he studied renaissance and baroque music performance practice at the conservatories in Amsterdam and The Hague. As performer Jan-Inge Wijk has played in the trio Ars Viva and the guitar duo Pas de deux.                           

    Following his interests in early and contemporary music he has conducted performances of works by composers such as Claudio Monteverdi, Carlos Farina, Reginald Smith Brindle and Karlheinz Stockhausen.

    With his insterest in language and poetry Jan-Inge Wijk has written the words for most of his vocal compositions. He is also the author of a book, Ariadnes tråd, about coherence in the education of professional musicians, as well as an extended essay, Hope and Glory!, concerning various aspects of the musician´s task.

    Other activities:

Musical arrangements and compositions for theatre performances.

Research and development: “Attempt at categorization of 3- and 4-part non-tonal chords and their application on the guitar”.

Research into primary sources for basso continuo on lute and guitar.

Compendia for b. c.-playing and improvisation on the modern guitar.

Manual of ornamentation in early baroque vocal music.

Guest professor at Malmö Musikhögskola, Sweden.

Appointed Examination Commissioner at final guitar exams in Denmark.

Participant in a number of symposia for musicians and composers.

Scholarship for work in Tuscania, Italy.

Member of the board of the cross-over cultural project "City in Movement".

Member of the board of Den Fynske Opera.
